Severe apathetic state in which patient cannot speak or initiate behavior

Alexia
Inability to recognize letters (an agnosia)

Alexithymia
Sifneos' term for inability to use words to describe one's emotion

Alimentary (automatism)
Automatic chewing movements during seizure

Allesthesia
Perceptual transfer of a real object to a different location or to the blind hemifield

Allodynia
Painful response to non-painful stimulus (neuropathic or psychogenic)

Ambitendency
Ambivalence of actions in psychosis reflected by series of tentative movements that do not accomplish the intended voluntary action

Ambulatory (automatism)
Automatic walking during seizure

Amusia
Inability to recognize musical components or musicality

Anomic aphasia
Aphasia with most prominent deficit in naming but diagnostic criteria weaker than other aphasias

Anosodiaphoria
Denial of severity of (indifference to) deficit, usually hemiparesis

Anosognosia
Denial of deficit due to neurological etiology

Antalgic (gait)
Limping gait due to pain in one extremity

Anterograde (amnesia)
Loss of new learning abiliity subsequent to the cause of amnesia

Anti-saccade
Ability to look away from object being followed

Aphasia
Disorder of language due to brain lesions

Aphonia
Inaudible speech

Apperceptive (agnosia)
Inability to recognize, discriminate among, or copy objects

Associative (agnosia)
Inability to recognize objects despite ability to describe and copy them

Assonance
Loose associations or flight of ideas in which words are connected by rhyming internal vowel sounds

Astereognosis
Inability to name objects placed inhand with eyes closed

Asterixis
Inability to maintain a fixed extremity posture against gravity without "flapping"

Athetosis
Slow irregular twisting involuntary movements

Aura
Perceptual symptom experienced before a migraine; simple partial seizure preceding a generalize or complex partial seizure

Automatic obedience
Automatic compliance with every instruction regardless of consequences, seen in catatonia and dementias

Automatism
Automatic movements during amnestic phase of seizure

Autoscopy
Hallucination of seeing ones' (double) self at a distance

Autotopagnosia
Inability to recognize parts of one's own body

Axial (praxis)
Ability to assume whole body postures to command
